If you have to pay for what you've done wrong... then I've got a big bill coming (GSH)

"For those of you who bet I would not be here — you lose." (1)

This is how Gil Scott-Heron concert started in the Montreux Jazz festival last Sunday night. We were there: impressed by his charisma, his voice, humility and his profound passion for music. The patron saint of spoken word soul gave a rare performance and Mr Heron's expression tells you instantly where his music is coming from.

(1) Because I always feel like running
Not away, because there is no such place
Because, if there was I would have found it by now
Because it's easier to run,
(GSH) Easier than staying and finding out you're the only one...who didn't run

And the worse US president ever is.....

president bush

WRONG!!!

Experts in American politics have ranked the 43 US president based on different criteria (leadership, imagination, communication ability, intelligence, integrity....) and Georges Bush comes 39th...only! Obama enters the survey in the 15th position. For the top five, just look at Mount Rushmore and top it up with Franklin Roosevelt.

Don't steal my flag

I am sure you have noticed all these flags poping up every where since the world cup has started. Cars, balconies, t-shirts proudly display people's support to their national football team. Some went even further, repainting their entire house! (see picture below)
Well, these flags have now gradually disappeared in Switzerland since the elimination of the "Nati" but Berlin still looks very "patriotic"!

football supporter flags

For some activists in Germany, a new game has developped: to steal these flags! 1 point for the small ones on cars, 2 points for the bigger ones, 15 points for a jersey, and 100 points for the 100m2 flag (already stolen twice!!)

Flags have huge meanings in people's mind. It recalls the foundations and unity of a country, its values and often what people have fought for. We do not certainly perceive the UN flag (peace) the same way as we look at the confederate flag (slavery). As Europe is being shaken down because of the financial crisis, countries favor their own selfish interests: how often have we heard recently "let the Greek, the Spanish, the Portuguese - and soon to come the Brit, the French, the German... clean their own mess alone?) ; Adenauer, Schumann, Monnet pushed for a common European reconciliation to avoid countries ending up in an other J.P Sartre "Huis Clos" ("no exit"). Hopefully, as far as today (and with the notorious exception of the French team), the only "hell" coming out of this South African world cup have been the Vuvuzelas!!
OK for the Flag, but even more OK to cheer for the best attitude and nice plays!

Scary flashmob

Greenpeace organized a surprising Flashmob in different areas of Zurich on May 25th to draw the risks of a nuclear disaster to the public's attention. Well, apparently they succeeded, as pedestrians looked terrified!

Toxic brands... for the cause

Although we have to admit that we have never been great football fans at Fred, we are delighted to hear that the "Fussball-Club Sankt Pauli" is back in the German premiere league. Although St Pauli played in 2. Bundesliga last year, it remains one of the most popular Club in Germany... but also with the true football fans in Europe!
St Pauli fan Club

In Hamburg, the 2nd largest city in Germany, St Pauli is the David vs. the Goliath Hamburger Sport Verein (HSV), a bit like Fred compared to the big tobacco multinationals. St Pauli has never won any major competition and is proud to state with irony on its website: "Non established since 1910"! (we should also think about something similar ;-))!

So what make this club so special?

  • first to ban any supporter misbehaviour and rise up against "bad habits" of the world of football.
  • first in 1963 to have a Black African striker from Togo named Guy Acolatse
  • Strong commitment to fight against any type of homophobia - which is still a taboo topic in Football.
  • last but not least, the most famous fan club called "St Pauli Fans gegen Rechts" actively militate against any form of fascism /neo-fascism... and not always peacefully when the club is playing against ex DDR teams of supporters !!

St Pauli Totenkopf

The "totenkopf" flag has become the symbol of the club in the 80ies and the residents of St Pauli call themselves the "Freibeuter" (the filibusters) to differentiate themselves from the petty bourgeois middle class. This militant and libertarian aspect of the club come from the alternative cultural influence of this St Pauli area located on the Reeperbahn side of Hamburg.

When the club encountered financial difficulties in the early nineties, its fans reacted quickly to avoid bankruptcy and started selling T-Shirts written "St. Pauli Retter" (St Pauli saviour), participated in events such as "Saufen für St Pauli" (booze for St Pauli) or "Astra trinken, St Pauli retten (drink Astra, save St Pauli) in local bars and clubs. We believe that the cigarettes pack displayed below with the skull and crossbones was also part of this effort to revigorate the finances of the club (should a private company had used this symbol to make money, we believe this pack would not have stayed on the shelves of the shops for too long!!!).
We look forward to spending a bit more time in Hamburg / St Pauli and hearing "hell's bells" from AC/DC echoed in the stadium before the beginning of the match.

Breaking the laws

It's often said that the law's are made to be broken !

And as you know, one of our values is Transgerssion Vs. Conformity

So we were amused to see the way the big tobacco coorporate companies who are paying millions of $ for Formula 1 sponsorship, react to the EU council ban on cigarette advertising in Europe cross-border cultural and sporting events.

Some say it's subliminal advertising, some say it's evil ...

We let you decide !
